Sheet piles are thin structural interlocking sections—typically made of steel, vinyl, or wood—driven into the ground to create a continuous barrier for earth retention, stabilization, and groundwater control.
Introduction to sheet piling
- Definition: Prefabricated sections with interlocking edges (joints) that form a tight wall to resist lateral pressure from soil or water.
- Materials: Most commonly constructed from high-strength steel, but options include reinforced concrete, timber, and vinyl (PVC).
- Mechanism: Driven or pushed into the earth using vibratory hammers, impact hammers, or hydraulic presses.

- Cofferdams: Temporary water-tight enclosures pumped dry to allow safe construction of bridge piers, locks, or dams.
- Waterfront structures: Bulkheads, quays, wharves, piers, and seawalls protecting coastal or river edges.
- Excavation support: Temporary or permanent retention systems for deep basements and underground parking garages.
- Cut-off walls: Environmental or hydraulic barriers used to stop water seepage or contain underground pollutants.
